Grandma Moses: American Modern?

Past event
Aug 2, 2017, 7 to 8:30 PM

Bennington Museum Curator Jamie Franklin will present “Grandma Moses, American Modern? Moses and the Narrative(s) of Modern Art,” in an illustrated talk.
The perception of Grandma Moses as a self-taught "primitive," disconnected from the art world and larger culture of her time, belies a much more complex story. Examining Grandma Moses and her work in the context of the art world in which she was initially received, and directly comparing her to paragons of modern and postmodern art, Jamie Franklin demonstrates that Moses’s work was far more in tune with the artistic and cultural zeitgeist of mid-twentieth century America than one might imagine.
Summer Wednesdays is generously sponsored by Four Seasons- Sotheby’s International Realty.
