Dessert & a Book: When the Killing's Done

Past event
Jul 19, 2017, 7 to 8:30 PM

The next book in the Jeudevine Library discussion series is WHEN THE KILLING'S DONE by T.C. Boyle, a richly funny and humane romp about human’s attempt to exert, for better or worse, power over the natural world. The discussion leader is Eric Hanson, VT State Loon Biologist and on the staff of the Vermont Center for Eco-studies. Deserts from the Magic Spoon Bakery and lemonade will be available! In the book one of the main characters is Alma Boyd Takesue, a National Park Service biologist spearheading the efforts to save native creatures on the Channel Islands from invasive species. Her antagonist, Dave LaJoy, is a local businessman who is fiercely opposed to the killing of any animals whatsoever and will go to any lengths to subvert her plans. Their confrontation plays out in a series of scenes escalating in violence, drama, and danger.
Extra Info: The program is part of a series called Pushing the Limits funded by a grant by the National Science Foundation to bring adults into discussion about science, engineering, math and technology. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the library. There will be a door prize: a $20 gift certificate from the Galaxy Bookshop. To reserve a copy or for more information call 472-5948 or e-mail: jeudevinelibrary@hardwickvt.org
