Menotti's “The Telephone” to take the stage in East Montpelier - Worth Answering on the First Ring
4:30pm & 7:30pm performances
The Old Meeting House, in East Montpelier, VT, in conjunction with Viva La Musica VT, will be hosting an entertaining evening exploring communication and relationships through the performing arts.
On Saturday, June 24, the audience will take a journey with emcee Roya Millard as she weaves together the music, drama and the spoken word, exploring together the nuance- and not-so-subtle- of communication and how it affects relationships.
The evening will feature music from members of the Old Meeting House Choir, as well as performers from the Essex Community Theatre. The event will culminate with Menotti's one act opera, “The Telephone,” featuring VT musicians Allison Devery, Steven Falbel and Eliza Thomas.
Set in the 1940s, “The Telephone” is a two-person opera, having been written for a soprano and a baritone, and set to a piano score. Ben, about to go away on a trip has decided to propose to Lucy. However, each time he begins to talk with her, the couple is interrupted by the telephone. The story, though in a time period quite distant technologically, has something to say about the influence and distraction provided through communication technology.
There will be two performances of “Call and Response: An Evening of Music and Theater Exploring Communication and Relationships,” at 4:30 and 7:30pm. A dessert cafe will follow each performance. Tickets are $8 each, and all proceeds will benefit the Old Meeting House Arts Fund.
Viva La Musica VT is a small performing arts company focused on education, exposure and outreach. By bringing operatic and classical works performed by Vermont artists to local venues, Viva is at once promoting Green Mountain talent and enhancing the musical and dramatic landscape.
