Pancake Breakfast at SCS
By Joyce Ke and Laragh Scharf
We are two 8th graders from Shelburne Community School and for our community service project this year we wanted to do something that brings our community closer together and will also help a cause. In the beginning of the trimester we went to the Arbors and spent time with the residents every Thursday afternoon and it had given us the idea to do a fundraiser to help with alzheimer’s research. We wanted to do something that was fun and involves everyone in the community, so we came up with a pancake breakfast. It will be $8 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. The pancake breakfast will be held on Sunday, May 21st at Shelburne Community School between 9am-11am and all proceeds will be donated to the ‘Vermont Alzheimer's Association’.
Did you know that Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia and accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases? No? Well it’s true, dementia is an illness that causes people to have serious symptoms that makes them unable to perform everyday things such as walking or remembering if you had done something. An example of the symptoms include memory loss or speech impairment.
Our goal for this pancake breakfast is to raise at least $500 to donate to the alzheimer's research foundation and to make our community stronger. For the pancake breakfast, we will be offering homemade pancakes, potatoes, and eggs. We will also have apple cider and water available for drinks.
During the pancake breakfast we will be holding a raffle with prizes such as a bottle of wine from the ‘Village Wine and Coffee’, a Vermont teddy bear, and gift cards. Tickets will be sold at the ticket table and at the raffle table for .25 cents per ticket. (Winners will be announced at 10:30am)
There will be a playground, basketball court, and many fun activities. As of (date) it will be (Temp) so we would recommend families to bring a blanket to lay on the warm Spring grass and to have a good time. We hope that families will be able to join us on Sunday, May 21st for some pancakes and a great time to support our cause.
