Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra Family Concert

The Vermont Philharmonic and the Green Mountain Youth Symphony will join forces at the Barre Opera House for a festive family-and-kid-oriented concert at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon, March 12th. The theme is “Music Through the Ages” with selections from the 16th to the 21st centuries. This is a fun way to introduce kids to classical music.

On the program is a work by Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli, followed by a Baroque Hornpipe from Handel’s “Water Music”, Haydn’s 18th Century Classical style Andante from the “Surprise” symphony, and then Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers” from his Romantic era Nutcracker Ballet. The 20th Century is represented by Sergio Cervetti’s “de la Tierra”, a work that gives the orchestra musicians an opportunity to improvise on a series of notes. And from the 21st Century, the audience will hear student composer Emily Sinnott’s “Starlit Waltz” and then a suite of music from How to Train Your Dragon films by the Green Mountain Youth Symphony.

The concert concludes with both orchestras performing the rousing finale from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, complete with audience-engaged “cannon” fire. Throughout the concert, students from the St Johnsbury School will see their art work projected on screen.

Tickets are available at the door and at the Barre Opera House website.
