Correction: the Concert below is the annual Winter Concert NOT the family concert as the Headline announced. But stay tuned - the Family Concert is coming up next month on March 12.
Vermont Philharmonic Presents Winter Concerts Feb 11 & 12
The Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra will perform “Music of Joy and Sorrow” on Saturday evening, February 11th at the Elley-Long Music Center at St Michael’s College (7:30 pm), and Sunday afternoon, February 12th, at the Barre Opera House (2 pm), with maestro Lou Kosma conducting.
The program opens with Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s cheerful Little Suite for Strings, first performed in 1888. Then the 2016 winner of the Borowicz Memorial Scholarship, Jonathan Goff, will perform the jazzy, brilliant piano solos of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – immediately recognizable from the opening sexy clarinet glissando, one of the memorable moments in 20th Century classical music.
The first half of the program closes with one of the deeply beautiful “sorrowful songs” of Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, opus 36, composed in 1976. The soprano soloist will be Mary Bonhag, a central Vermont treasure. The final piece on the program is Tchaikovsky’s rousing “Little Russian” Symphony no. 2. The symphony incorporates several familiar-sounding Ukrainian folk melodies.
Tickets are available at the door ($15 / $12 seniors / $5 students). Tickets for the Barre Opera House performance are also
available at 476-8188. Visit vermontphilharmonic.org for more information.
