Selectboard Considers Sanctuary Town Policy Monday

Past event
Jan 2, 2017, 7 to 7:30 PM

Should East Montpelier declare itself as a "sanctuary town"? There's no single definition of a sanctuary town, but the basic idea is that municipal officials, particularly law enforcement, will not inquire into a person's immigration status when interacting with them.

With the incoming administration talking a hard line on immigration violations, many are calling on more municipalities to declare themselves sanctuary towns or cities, and several in Vermont have already done so.

Is this a good idea for East Montpelier? What if President Trump makes good on his threat to block federal funding to sanctuary towns? The Selectboard will take up that discussion this Monday, January 2. It's scheduled for 7:00 - 7:30 pm on the agenda, but the agenda times are just an estimate. If you want to participate, please come to the meeting! Or if you want to make your opinions known, drop me an email at carl@etnier.net or send one to the town via Town Administrator Bruce Johnson at eastmontadmin@comcast.net

For background: VPR's Vermont Edition on Dec. 14 did a good job of exploring what it means to be a sanctuary town

And a shorter VPR news piece covered the same topic
