This series at Railyard Apothecary takes a journey down the digestive tract to explore key organs of digestion and their influences on our health. In this series, co-led by Jessica Morrison, Registered Nurse and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner student, and Nick Cavanaugh, third year student at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, we will discuss nutritional and herbal approaches to treating common complaints and strengthening these organs. Each workshop will also include instruction in making your own herbal and fermented food recipes at home.
Oct. 27 - The stomach: Stomach Acid, Friend or Foe?
Though acid blocking drugs reduce acid reflux and indigestion, the cause behind these symptoms is often too little stomach acid, not too much! Low stomach acid can lead to indigestion of important nutrients and health consequences as far-ranging as infection, osteoporosis, leaky gut, food allergy and autoimmunity. This workshop is for anyone looking for nutritional and herbal approaches to symptom relief from acid reflux and indigestion or building overall better health and well-being through improved digestion.
We will include a demonstration of how to make a tincture of herbal bitters to stimulate stomach acid and digestion.
November 10th - The liver and gallbladder: Often ignored, big consequences for health.
The gallbladder is so often overlooked that we don’t think about it until it’s surgically removed! We will learn about the potent role of this tiny organ in digestion of fats and vitamins essential to health and its implications for overall health. Learn how to support this organ with healthy fats and nutrients to prevent disease.
Additionally we will discuss health of the liver and its role in digestive function. This important organ is also often overlooked, though in traditional herbal medicine it has often received more attention for the many roles it plays in the body.
The workshop will include a demonstration and tasting of beet kvass, a fermented beet tonic for the gallbladder that is inexpensive and easy to make at home.
November 17 - The intestines: Beyond probiotics
Learn about how the bacteria in our gut keeps us healthy and how to nourish the natural bacteria in your gut. Spoiler: it’s not all about probiotics!
The workshop will include a demonstration of how to make yogurt at home. It’s half the price of store-bought yogurt and more easily digestible for those who are lactose-free!
