United Church of Fairfax, 8 Fletcher Rd., Fairfax, VT 05454. Please join us for this simple yet moving service which describes the time between the Last Supper and the Passion of Christ. Tenebrae is a Latin word for darkness. The service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story so while it is not a happy service it is a powerful one. Our happiness is realized and expressed on Easter Morning.
The Tenebrae service begins with the church lit by candlelight. The service is divided into eight or nine sections with each section including a scripture reading, the extinguishing of one candle, and a drum beat. By the time all scriptures have been read the church is in darkness. There is no benediction, everyone leaves in silence.
The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events, and it is left unfinished, because the story isn't over until Easter Day. It opens a time for reflection & prayer.
