Having a dog should be a joy, not a battle. Dogs are trying to figure out what we want all the time. Positive Reinforcement Training is a co-operative language between dog and human. The language benefits both dog and human. My job is to teach you, the human how to communicate effectively with your dog, so your dog can be successful.
Many dogs have traumatic backgrounds that may be triggered by something in their environment that they perceive as dangerous. Aggression is a natural response. It is a signal to warn away a threat. Behind all aggressive or fearful behavior is emotion. It is the emotion that needs to be changed in order to change the behavior. Behavior modification and desensitization are designed to change emotions. If the dog no longer feels threatened, then the aggressive behavior stops because it serves no purpose to the dog.
A certified trainer will have their certification initials after their name. If they do not, be cautious. The organization that certifies trainers to take aggression cases is the IAABC, The International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. The top certification from this organization is CDBC, or Certified Dog Behavior Consultant. Look for these initials after a trainer's name to make sure that they have the education needed to change behavior and to keep everyone safe.

Behavior Consultants will use a Functional Assessment and Intervention Design model to work aggression cases. The Function is the purpose it serves the dog. Why is the dog doing this? The Intervention Design is the plan that is put into place to change the behavior. One follows the other.
