A message from MALT and the TAM, in response to the current dog dialog:

A message from MALT and the TAM, in response to the current dog dialog:
It is not MALT's job to enforce how people use our recreation trail network. It is our job to maintain quality trails, provide quality access, and promote connection with nature. MALT's official position is that we ASK dog owners keep their dogs on a leash while on the TAM and other MALT trails. We encourage responsible recreation and healthy exercise for all our friends, human and furry. We strongly encourage picking up your dog waste and disposing of it in a garbage receptacle. Poop on the side of the trail, bagged or unbagged, is just plain gross.
To provide some clarity on this topic, we connected with the three core towns through which MALT's trails pass:
The Middlebury Town Ordinance regarding the control of dogs and wolf hybrids, Article III - Prohibited Acts, Section 1, states... "A dog shall not run at large within the limits of the Town of Middlebury." There are many ways of keeping a dog from "running at large", one of which is using a leash. Other ways do include voice command, etc. Please read the full document here: https://cms5.revize.com/revize/middlebury/document_center/Ordinances/Dog%20Ordinance%202007.pdf
The Town of Weybridge has a detailed dog ordinance and you can view it here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/561ebfbbe4b049704cd4bbf2/t/65f340606c17606e4ca21077/1[...]pdf
The Town of Cornwall has a dog ordinance here: http://cornwallvt.com/minutes/select/signeddogordinance022015.pdf
We hope that when on the trails, users will communicate clearly and respectfully and do everything possible to prevent uncomfortable or unsafe interactions between their pets and other pets or people.
