Music is one of life's great miracles and pleasures. The curious act of combining sounds in harmony connects us to one another in community, communicates where words fail, and helps us make sense of our place in this vast universe. I believe that we are never more human than when we express ourselves creatively.

My name is Mike, and my mission as a teacher is to guide my students in developing the tools, techniques, and consistency of action to realize their creative dreams.
In my studio, I offer weekly or biweekly private lessons (in-person or remote) to a small cohort of dedicated students, who also meet in group sessions at regular intervals for feedback on works-in-progress and building community. Areas of expertise include:
— Music composition in any style (concert hall, stage, screen, songwriting)
— Improvisation, harmony, ear training, and theory
— Piano and keyboard skills (classical, jazz, collaborative, improvisation)
— Orchestration, arranging, and music production
About me:
I'm a full-time professional composer, writer, and pianist working in concert music, theater, and film/TV. Commissions include projects for Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the American Repertory Theater, among many others. I hold degrees from Harvard (BA, music) and Michigan (MA, composition; PhD, music composition and theory), and recently completed a post-doc at the Harvard University Society of Fellows, after which my family and I settled in Burlington. I have over ten years of experience teaching both privately and at the university level.
