The Lake Bomoseen Association is thrilled to share that the Greeter Program at Lake Bomoseen had another successful season. This program has been in place at Lake Bomoseen since 2006. This year, Greeters were stationed at both the Kehoe and Float Bridge Launch areas every weekend and Holiday beginning on Memorial Day and continuing through Labor Day. Additionally, they covered the Kehoe Launch site every Monday and Friday in July and most Mondays and Fridays in August.
The purpose of the Greeter program is to educate boaters on the hazards of transporting Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) from their boats, to the lake and vice-versa. Lake Bomoseen is the only lake in VT with an invasion of Asian clams, (resulting in heightened water clarity). There are other invasive species however that have not reached Lake Bomoseen, and the goal is to keep them out as well.
This program is sponsored by the VT DEC AIS program and co-sponsored by the LBA. Each year the LBA provides in excess of $10,000 to support this program; provides a Greeter Program Coordinator, a volunteer member of the LBA Board and volunteer supervisors for each day the program is in place – all volunteers are members of the LBA.
In 2023, 3,625 boats passed through the Greeter stations and the greeters were allowed to inspect 3,068 boats and 530 boats required decontamination
This year the Special Use Permit, that the LBA is granted for this program from VT Fish & Wildlife also included a Boat Wash station. This pilot program was generously funded by Doug Casella with additional funding and coordination support from the LBA. The boat wash operated on holiday weekends. A total of 20 boats went through during this pilot program; we are pleased to report that it was a successful pilot in terms of feasibility.
The LBA is proud of the work done by our Greeters, many of whom are high-school students!
