Like the whaling ships of the 21st century it wasn't actually doing research, it was a hunting ship exploiting a loophole in the laws of the galactic federation. In fact it was among the most dangerous ships in the galaxy, captained by the notorious disinformation agent Dr. Johnny Bananas. The only people who called him doctor though were his crew, whom he called the Troll Farm. There has hardly ever been a force more evil in the history of intelligent life, more destructive and useless as superstition. Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities and that was the very business Dr. Bananas and his crew of ruthless trolls did for a price. Spreading fear and confusion wherever they went. Jamming and intercepting communications, replacing facts with opinion, they spread lies far and wide, deepfaking with such accurate depictions that even your own mother could not tell the difference between the real and the unreal.
The instant she awoke she knew she was in trouble, in fact the extraction had already begun. Her entire life's experience was being downloaded into the farms data banks. They would exploit every contact, every memory, every relationship that she ever encountered if she could not stop the transfer and escape. She thought out loud to herself "It's my low frequency oscillator", it was then she had the answer. She would flood the patch with noise, like she had accidentally done to her ships radar.
