I choose to train at the Green due to the on leash policy in park including on the trails clearly posted throughout the park. Dog interactions can be unpredictable when not structured. Many dogs are fearful of new dogs. Nothing worse than hearing someone yell "don't worry they're friendly" as an unknown dog is running at you and your fearful or unpredictable dog that is in training to help build confidence or neutrality. This will set training progress back ,in many cases, A LOT. Not to mention people who have a fear or anxiety around strange dogs due to past experiences or bites. Im sure a majority of off leash dogs are lovely and deserve time to run and play with other dogs. However, it is not fair to assume that every dog or person is accepting of unsolicited greetings with strange dogs especially at a place with clear on leash policy.
A dog park may be a good alternative but those still allow for unpredictable interactions between dogs. A fantastic alternative is a long line! Your dog can have anywhere from 15 to 100ft of freedom while still being under your control. A long line also allows you to practice building a reliable recall around distractions like other dogs, kids playing, joggers or anyone else enjoying the Green. This recall can then be utilized at off leash areas or in your own back yard. Also please feel empowered to advocate for your dog, no need to be hostile but by clearly asking someone to give your dog space or leash their own dog, we can continue to raise awareness about leash policy and prevent negative interactions.
