I was sorry to hear that a pack mentality seriously injured a dog on the trails in town. Anytime a pack of 3 or more dogs comes together in a spring-time, free-run scenario, levels are ramped. It is instinctual behavior, but can quickly become dangerous, if the dogs aren't clear about who the leader is, are after prey, experiencing a change in environment or a new dog enters the group. Even something as simple, as the human being sick or feeling weak can completely change a pack. Believe me, I have gone through all this and the job isn't easy.
I wanted to make a statement about my services, to be clear about what I offer the community and to be clear that I DO NOT provide off leash experiences or experiences on personal property outside of house sitting of cats/caged animals, transportation to and from homes, unlocking and locking homes, watering plants and bringing in mail.
After 14 years, I have developed what I feel is a comfortable, calm, and serene experience on my property. My screening process is slowed down to 2 dogs per week (sometimes both pass, sometimes none), pre screened through an answer and question session before even being invited, and integration with my pack is done completely inside a large fenced in area using my 70 pound manager labradoodles Cody (10) and Caesar (2) who have a ton of experience knowing what I want and don't want.
I just considered hiring employees to handle house sitting and dog walking services, as there is such high demand. But, considering this incident I have scaled back my plans, and am now looking into a paid mentorship instead.
If anyone is interested in learning how to operate a house sitting, dog walking, dog boarding or dog playgroup business, I may be interested in passing my knowledge along.
Here's to the next at 15 years I plan to be in business and for all the community support that has helped me raise my sons and care for my aging parents over the years. They are now 17 and 15! and my parents have peacefully passed.
