Capital Campaign Kick-Off at Dr. Holcomb House

Past event
Oct 16, 2016, 2 to 4 PM

Like the many seniors in Lamoille County who enjoy creating art, Dr. Lyndhurst Holcomb participated in a community art class in 1966. His painting from that time, The Red Barn, has been donated to the Johnson Historical Society by his granddaughter Monica Holcomb. It hangs above the desk he used when he practiced medicine for 55 years, following his 1906 graduation from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine. The Historical Society gave their building its name as a tribute to Dr. Holcomb.
Within the house, the Historical Society is offering room naming opportunities to raise funds for programs and to retire the mortgage. The office used by Dr. Holcomb has been named in honor of Walter and Velma Cook by their sons Peter and Tom.
Walter Cook was hired by the Vermont Electric Coop in 1948. A civil engineer, he had run power and communication lines in wartime Boston harbor for the Army before coming to Johnson, Vermont. With a lot of work he improved continuity of service and by 1980 had expanded rural electric service to 30,000 Vermonters. Among other things, Walter is remembered for making the VEC a major dealer of Hotpoint home appliances in 1960. Many Johnson homes were furnished with Hotpoint stoves and refrigerators until the division was discontinued in 1976. The Cook family lived on St Johns Street for many years.
Room naming is one of many ways that individuals, families, businesses and groups of friends can support the Johnson Historical Society. A brochure is available with more information and options.
The Capital Campaign kicks-off on Sunday, October 16, 2016 from 2 to 4 PM at the Dr. Holcomb House, 188 Main Street, Johnson. Join the celebration and see all the work that has been completed to transform the building to an historic and educational museum. Brief presentations will start at 2:30 PM. Refreshments will be served. On Sunday, additional parking will be available in the Maplefields Parking Lot (west side and back of building.) For information or to RSVP contact Alice Whiting at 635-7797 or email whiting@myfairpoint.net.
