Fall Foliage Chickering Bog Walk

Rose Paul of The Nature Conservancy has kindly agreed to lead the Conservation Commission’s Fall Foliage walk through Chickering Fen (a/k/a Bog) to inform us about what we’re looking at. We’ll meet on Saturday 10/8 at 9:00 a.m. at the Lightening Ridge Road entrance, which is just past George Road heading toward Adamant. There are a few parking spaces in a small gravel lot on George Road. If you do park there, be VERY CAREFUL not to touch the wild parsnip that is growing in the field and along the road. To get to the head of the Bog trail on Lightening Ridge Road, it is advised to walk up George Road rather than cutting through the field. Here’s some information about someone’s recent encounter with the wild parsnip in that area and photos of the resulting rash and the plant: http://jimkelso.com/journal/?p=375

But don’t let that scare you away from the guided walk through the Fen on Saturday morning, which is sure to be lovely and interesting. And we'll get an explanation about why the Bog is actually a Fen. Here’s a link to The Nature Conservancy’s web site about the Fen: http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/vermont/places-preser[...]oDo
