JEWISH JAZZ by Classicopia at Beth Jacob Synagogue, Montpelier
Saturday evening, October 8th at 7:00 pm
A lively evening of American Jazz and classic Klezmer interwoven with fascinating history.
Classicopia (www.classicopia.org), a chamber music organization based in Hanover, NH area since 2001, will present a very fun show with a fabulous clarinet player named Steve Loew and Daniel Weiser, the artistic director, on piano.
The show highlights the connections between Klezmer style music and American Jazz, especially in New York City at the turn of the 20th century as the waves of Jewish immigrants met the influx of black migrants moving from the South. The result was the Great American Songbook, which, of course, was led mostly by Jewish composers such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and George Gershwin.
This concert reveals some of the connections as the musicians alternate between Klezmer-style pieces and works by Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, and Benny Goodman. Daniel will also talk about the historical connections and read from the terribly anti-semitic tract written by Henry Ford called "Jewish Jazz" that sees this synthesis in a very dark light.
Tickets are $15 for synagogue members, $20 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased online at https://bethjacobvt.org/civicrm/event/register?id=1363&reset=1 and will also be sold at the door, cash or check. Open seating.
