The Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection event, cosponsored by the Mad River Resource Management Alliance, Casella Waste Systems and the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation will be held at the Harwood Union High School in Duxbury on Saturday, October 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. So if you are an Alliance resident or small business from Fayston, Moretown, Roxbury, Waitsfield, Warren and Waterbury and have household hazardous wastes like pool chemicals, old gasoline, glues, solvents and degreasers, oven and drain cleaners, you can bring up to 10 gallons of these wastes and all of your pesticides and architectural oil or latex paints, at no charge for proper disposal. Note, You can also bring all your compact fluorescent lamps and up to 10 additional fluorescent tubes to this event. We can now take non-rechargeable alkaline, carbon-zinc, and lithium metal Primary Batteries at no charge. Duxbury residents are now in the Central Vermont Solid Waste District and should participate in their HHW events.

Conditionally exempt small quantity generators must pre-register for this event by September 29. While you’re at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection, you can visit the paint drop and swap where folks can bring good cans of paint that they don’t need and you can pick these up and use them for your painting tasks. If you have any other mercury related compounds like thermometers, thermostats, switches, medical or scientific instruments we can take them at this collection day event. Any mercury thermostats that are brought in will be eligible to receive a coupon valued at $5.00 that can be mailed to the Thermostat Recycling Corporation. The cover must be on the thermostat to be eligible for the incentive fee. If you have a mercury thermometer, we will swap you for a digital thermometer at this event at no charge. Kinney’s Drug and Variety and Waterbury Pharmacy will also accept mercury thermometers on a daily basis but you cannot swap for a digital thermometer at these stores. During normal working hours, you can also bring fluorescent lamps and up to 5 gallons of architectural paints, to the Waterbury True Value Hardware Store, Aubuchon’s Hardware in Waterbury, Kenyon’s True Value Hardware in Northfield or Bisbee’s Hardware in Waitsfield for recycling. Kenyon’s True Value Hardware and the Earthwise Transfer Station in Waitsfield can take fluorescent lamps for recycling. There is no charge for these product stewardship programs. Please don’t bring any broken lamps or leaking paint cans to these sites.
