Did you know that the Alicia Shanks Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk is taking place next Saturday, September 24th? The race begins at 8:30 am at Essex Elementary School located at 1 Bixby Hill Road in Essex Town. The Alicia Shanks Memorial Scholarship Fund assists college juniors and seniors who demonstrate the capacity to become passionate and dedicated teachers.

Educator, Mary Alicia Shanks died tragically on August 24, 2006 while preparing for the beginning of the school year, the innocent victim of a shooting incident at Essex Elementary School. Alicia touched the hearts of two generations of students. She inspired a respect for diverse cultures and valued each of her students. Alicia was a friend to all who passed through her classroom door.

The entire Essex Town School District educational community fondly remembers Alicia Shanks who taught children in Essex for 22 years. Alicia positively influenced hundreds of students' lives and was loved by students, families and staff members. The School Board and Essex Educators Association have established a scholarship fund in Alicia's name to carry on her legacy of teaching and loving children.
