The Stowe Free Library will be hosting an Online Privacy Workshop on Monday, October 24th. Alison Macrina of the Library Freedom Project will be teaching the basics of keeping your online data and communications a little safer. The workshop will be held 5:30 pm in the community meeting room at the Stowe Free Library. Beginners are welcome as well as more advanced internet users.
The Library Freedom Project was founded by Alison Macrina in 2013. This project is a partnership between librarians, technology experts, attorneys, and privacy advocates and aims to address the issues with surveillance as well as making intellectual freedom within libraries a reality . Learning about potential surveillance threats allows internet users not only to be safer while online but more aware of potential security breaches and what to do in case of a breach. It is important to understand that going online doesn't have to mean compromising privacy and security. By teaching librarians, and their communities, about the threats of corporate data-mining, government surveillance, and identity threats, the Library Freedom Project empowers citizens to protect their own privacy.
In the Online Privacy workshop Alison Macrina will cover some of the threats to privacy that exist in the online sphere, as well as tips and tools that can help -- password management, safer browsing, blocking web trackers, encrypted texting, and general strategies for safer online behavior. This is an increasingly important discussion in our modern, ever-evolving society. This workshop is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be provided. Please join us Monday, October 24th at 5:30pm at the Stowe Free Library.
