Sister Lucy Kurien of Kerala, India, founded Maher in 1997 in response to the dire oppression and violence many women were facing in rural India. She built a small safe-home in a small village outside the city Pune. Today, Maher has 31 homes for children, women and men. They also conduct grassroots work in slums and villages, targeting poverty and oppression at its root. Maher is Interfaith, Caste-Free and Staffed by Locals.

I am hosting Lucy this weekend in Burlington and it has been fabulous. Traveling with her is Gaus Sayyad, an amazing young man who grew up at Maher since the age of seven. Their last presentation will be tomorrow, Monday the 14th, at UVM in Aiken, room 102 at 1pm.

I have been to Maher three times to volunteer and I continue involvement from home. Please come hear the stories of an unorthodox Catholic nun who is fighting for women's rights in her home-country. Lucy has much to teach the world about eradicating poverty with a grassroots approach.
