Authors Reading: Words Out Loud, Sept. 18

Come welcome Vermont authors William Alexander and Laura Williams McCaffrey, who will read as part of WORDS OUT LOUD: Poetry & Parables, Fantasy & Fables, at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at the Old West Church, in conjunction with the Art at the Kent PARABLES exhibit at the Kent Museum, where receptions will follow the readings.

WILLIAM ALEXANDER, a second-generation immigrant to the United States, is the author of numerous of books, including four books for middle-grade audiences. His book Nomad was recently named a Finalist for the International Latino Book Award. His 2012 novel Goblin Secrets received a National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. A New York Times best-selling author of fantasy and young fiction, Alexander often explores alienation through imaginary worlds in his writing. He teaches at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults.

LAURA WILLIAMS McCAFFREY, a native Vermonter and author of novels and short stories, writes fiction influenced by folktales, historical fiction, teen flicks, and children’s literature. Her story “Into the Vast” won the SCBWI 2014 Magazine Merit Award for fiction. Her most recent novel, Marked, is a dystopian tale about a girl in a double bind. Like much of her work, the story revolves around a female main character. Recently named Fiction Editor of YARN (Young Adult Review Network), she is also the 2016 Guest Children’s Lit Editor at Hunger Mountain. A respected educator, McCaffrey works as a mentor, as a teacher on faculty at Pacem School and Homeschool Center, and as a faculty member at Solstice, Pine Manor College’s MFA in Writing Program, among other positions. She lives in East Montpelier.

This reading series has been voluntarily curated by Calais poets Jody Gladding and Mary Elder Jacobsen with the generosity of many, including the presenters, and also the Kent Museum curators Allyson Evans, Nel Emlen, and David Schutz.
