This Week's Events at the Brookfield Old Town Hall!

Past event
Sep 8, 2016, 7 to 9 PM

Tomorrow evening, come for “Pie and Politics” at 7 pm at the Brookfield Old Town Hall. This event is hosted by the Randolph Herald and the Brookfield Community Partnership, and will feature a debate and discussion with the candidates running for Orange-Washington-Addison State Representative and Orange County Senator. Enjoy home-baked pies and an opportunity to mingle with local office-seekers in an informal setting.

Friday, September 9th at 7 pm, come learn about Loons! Vermont’s “Loon Man”, Eric Hanson, will present “The Natural (and Unnatural) History of the Common Loon: stories about a loon’s life and their conservation.”

In this program, Eric Hanson will discuss the amazing recovery of loons in Vermont over the past 25 years, the threats that they face, and the conservation actions that have brought them back. We’ll also explore their fascinating behaviors and natural history, including new research on how loons find a territory and what is being conveyed in the yodel call.

Since 1998, Eric Hanson has been the biologist for the Vermont Loon Conservation Project (VLCP), a program of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. He has conducted research on the Common Loon since 1992. His early work focused on banding loons to answer basic biological questions and assess toxicology concerns. Eric then received his M.S. degree at the University of Minnesota setting up a volunteer-based monitoring program for Minnesota’s 12,000 loons.

Eric’s loon work in Vermont has focused on management around loon nest sites and education of lake users. He also teaches various ecology courses at Sterling College and for the Road Scholar program. In the winter months, he takes care of the cross country ski trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

Thanks to ECFiber for sponsoring this event.

And Sunday, September 11th at 4 pm, our Family Fun Days series continues with music by Jennings and McComber and a pot luck dinner. Andy and Kara Lake (“Jennings and McComber”) played a family show at the Old Town Hall last summer, and they’re back this year by popular demand! At last year’s show, the young members of the audience were invited to join the fun – some sang, others played instruments, most had a prop to enact the songs, and everyone had a blast. This year’s show is sure to be another crowd-pleaser!

Jennings and McComber describe their music as “Green Mountain Indie Folk with Celtic Roots” and it features Kara’s melodic voice and Andy on up to six different instruments, including guitar, baritone guitar, banjo, double bass, mandolin, and piano accordion.

Immediately following the show, at 5pm, we will all sit down to a community potluck supper. Please bring a dish to share! For questions or more info, contact Shelby at 276-3535 or girard745@yahoo.com.

National Life Group Foundation is the sponsor for this event.

And continued thanks to the Frankenburg Agency for generously sponsoring the entire 2016 series of events at the Brookfield Old Town Hall.
