The documentary, "Ice Harvesting", will be shown by the East Monkton Church Association on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the East Monkton Church, 405 Church Road.
Ice was one of New England’s most important industries at the end of the 19th century. Although modern refrigeration technology ended the large scale export of river and lake ice, cutting and storing ice was still widely practiced in the 1940’s. This documentary shows footage of the ice harvesting of rivers and lakes for commercial and private use, including the use of hand tools and gasoline-powered equipment, as well as ice-house interiors with massive ice blocks being maneuvered at high speed.
Photographs of ice harvesting on Monkton Pond will be viewed following the documentary.
The showing is free and open to the public. The East Monkton Church Association will gratefully accept donations for the restoration and preservation of the East Monkton Church at the showing of the video.
Please note that there are no restroom facilities at the East Monkton Church.
