Please join us to celebrate the life and work of Goddard College alumna Priscilla Ruth Davis Backman at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 21, in the Haybarn Theatre on Goddard's campus in Plainfield, Vermont.
Goddard College President Robert P. Kenny will formally present the 5th Annual Presidential Award for Activism posthumously to Backman, who passed away on May 8, 2015. The award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of social justice and who embody the highest ideals and aspirations of Goddard College.
Priscilla Backman graduated from the Goddard College Junior College in 1943 and received her Bachelor of Arts from Goddard in 1946. In 1965 she returned to Goddard to establish, organize, and direct the off-campus work term program. Priscilla set a great example of what an activist can and should be. She served her community selflessly, never looking for credit. An anti-war activist and tax resister, she was also deeply involved in the efforts to abolish the death penalty and active in the anti-nuclear movement.
The award will be presented during the Goddard College Undergraduate Program Commencement Ceremony. Join us as we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Priscilla Backman.
