Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium

The Horace Greeley Writers' Symposium, held each year in Poultney, Vermont, is a celebration of Horace Greeley's life. The symposium explores the art of writing as presented by publishers and writers in the fields of literature, poetry, philosophy, and history.

The 11th annual Horace Greeley Writers' Symposium will be held Saturday, October 19th, 2013 from 9:30 am to 5 pm, at the Poultney United Methodist Church located at 108 Main Street, Poultney, VT. Registration for this event is $70, with a special student rate of $20. Registration forms can be found in brochures at local businesses, at the Poultney Public Library, and on the Foundation website at horacegreeleyfoundation.org. Registrations are also welcome the day of the symposium.

This year the Horace Greeley Foundation is excited to announce that the Keynote Speaker of the Symposium will be Brother Christopher Savage. Brother Christopher’s topic will be “Mining Our Own Experience: Writing Out Of Our Own Wisdom”. He is the principal writer for the Monks of New Skete of their books In the Spirit of Happiness, Rise Up with a Listening Heart, I & Dog, Dogs and Devotion, The Art of Raising a Puppy, and the revised edition of How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend. Hieromonk (priest-monk) at New Skete Monastery in Cambridge, New York, Brother Christopher is also a renowned dog trainer. Before entering monastic life, he attended the University of Southern California, Georgetown University, and St. Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania, where he earned his degree in philosophy.

This year’s featured presenters are Laird Christensen, Author and Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Green Mountain College; Joyce Thomas, Poet and Professor of English at Castleton State College; and Burnham Holmes, Author and teacher of Writing and Speaking at Castleton State College.

The Symposium is a dynamic day of learning and nurturing for writers of all ages and genres. This event draws writers and authors from across New York and New England to Poultney every year.
