If you think “Quaker style” means the man on the Quaker Oats box, think again!
Join us Sunday, July 31 at 3:00 when scholar Anne Verplanck presents a talk on Quaker aesthetics. Many of us assume that Quakers preferred plain things, whether buildings, quilts, portraits, or furniture. Ms. Verplanck will address how Quakers in places as diverse as rural Vermont and urban Philadelphia used possessions to express their beliefs and how their choice and use of possessions varied with time, place, age, and devoutness. Ms. Verplanck teaches American Studies at Penn State and is the co-editor of Quaker Aesthetics.
The talk is offered in conjunction with the Museum’s 2016 exhibit –Quaker Made: Vermont Furniture, 1820-1835 -on view daily until October 30. The cost is $2 for the program only or free with Museum admission.
We hope to see you there!
