SB Democrats: Justice of the Peace Nominations, Monday

South Burlington Democrats are holding a special meeting to select nominees for the November ballot as Democratic Justices of the Peace. The meeting is 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 1 at the Miller Conference Room (left entrance of the Police Station, 19 Gregory Drive).

A Justice of the Peace serves the city in important ways as a member of the Board of Civil Authority (BCA). A primary responsibility is to serve as an election official on the various election days in March, August, and November (and any special elections called). It is also necessary, as members of the BCA, to hear property tax assessment appeals and requests for tax abatements as needed (usually around 3 times a year). Finally, Justices of the Peace are eligible to marry folks in the State of Vermont and act as a notary public.

Our new “same day registration” in Vermont will begin next year, so the polls will be busier. We are looking for committed Democrats to serve. Please contact Chris Shaw 864-1515 for more info.
