On May 10, 1916 12 women started a reading club, called the“ Alburgh Village Improvement
Society. “ 1925 Laura Cargill was named Alburgh LIbrarian. 1961 Voters approve a Municipal building to house Town and Village offices and (at last) a Town LIbrary. 1962 The Alburgh LIbrary moved to rooms in the new Municipal Building. 1991 the Alburgh LIbrary celebrated its 75th anniversary of its founding, honoring the memory of Laura Cargill and the 12 women who worked so long and so hard to establish a permanent library in Alburgh. 1988 Marybelle Singer with her love of the arts and books, happened upon our library, where she took on the task of expanding the hours as well as the book selection. She was proud of her adopted town, interacting with town-folks, summer residents, and readers from neighboring towns and Canada. 2012 after Marybelle’s passing the Librarian / LIbrary Director title is in the very loving hands of Gina Lewis with her love and passion of everything books.
Please join us on Saturday July 30, 2016 from 2 to 4 as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary. Bring the Family for a bit of history, music, food, fun and games.
