On Friday, August 12th, join naturalist Bradley Materick on a paddling journey to explore the natural and cultural history of the Winooski River!
The day will begin at 10 AM with a presentation in the Richmond Free Library that will provide a big picture overview of the natural and cultural forces that have shaped the Winooski River watershed, from continental collisions starting a billion years ago, to mile thick glaciers covering the land for thousands of years, to human influences dating back to the original indigenous inhabitants of this land. The presentation will use images and animations to provide a clear understanding of the complex and interconnected geological, ecological and cultural stories that explain why our Winooski River looks the way it does today.
Following a break for lunch, we will launch onto the river itself with canoes and kayaks to learn more about the specific natural history of the Winooski as it flows through Bolton and Richmond. We will put in at the Bolton Access and paddle approximately 5 miles to take out at the Richmond Village Green. Along the way, our naturalist guide Bradley will talk about the natural and cultural features we see and answer your questions. Hydrology, geology, plants, birds, natural communities such as the floodplain forest…all are possible topics depending on what we see and what participants are curious about! The river is flat and free of rapids on this stretch, so beginner to advanced boaters of all ages will feel comfortable!
Participants must bring their own boats, paddles, life jackets, and any other personal paddling gear. Personal vehicles will be used to shuttle boats and people between the put in and take out. Participants should also bring a lunch or plan to purchase lunch in Richmond.
Cost for the presentation only is $5 and cost for the paddling portion is $25. Participants are welcome to come for the presentation only, the paddling only, or both! Of course, we hope that you will join us for the entire experience!
