Black Americans in the Green Mountains: 1780 -1880
Elise Guyette presents her research on an early African American hillside farming community that spanned the border between Hinesburgh and Huntington. The three generations of families on Lincoln Hill gradually connected to other African descended people throughout Vermont, and some eventually participated in the Civil War and Reconstruction efforts in the South. Dr. Guyette is the author of Vermont: A Cultural Patchwork and Discovering Black Vermont for which she received the 2010 Richard O. Hathaway Award from the Vermont Historical Society for outstanding contributions to the field of Vermont history.
