Glacial Geology of Jericho
Dr. Stephen Wright, University of Vermont Saturday, July 16, 9 am - 12 noon Meet at Jericho Center Green
Join the Jericho Conservation Commission this Saturday morning for a Geology walk with Dr. Stephen Wright of the University of Vermont. Jericho has a fascinating geological history. The story of the retreat of the glaciers from Vermont is one that has fascinated Dr. Wright for many years. He has brought students to Jericho year after year to learn about this history by looking at clues in the soils deposited during the those volatile millennia from 20,000 to 10,000 years ago, when ice was melting and meltwater was carrying boulders, cobbles, sand, silt, and clay through flowing streams and into placid lakes and even an inland sea. Dr. Wright will take us to a landslide that reveals this whole story in layers upon layers of sediments. He tells the story in a most engaging way, bringing the past alive and making it easy for anyone to understand. The hike is easy. All ages are welcome.
