Please join the Mount Tabor/Danby Historical Society on Monday, July 18th at 7 PM at the Silas Griffith Library, 74 South Main Street in Danby
for a presentation on Abe Rosen's General store by Ellen Boer, Abe's grandaughter.
Ellen will present the fascinating story of her Jewish grandfather's immigration to this country and opening a small cash store in Danby which was completely destroyed by fire in 1918. Left destitute, he subsequently took over the Silas Griffith Store, which was southern Vermont's tallest building at the time. It was a four story department store, and he became one of the most successful merchants in Rutland County. Rosen family members operated other successful businesses in Rutland County as well. Mrs. Boer will reflect on this “American Dream Come True” and relate some of her mother's recollections about what it was like growing up as a Jewish girl in Danby.
The event is free and open to the public and donations are gratefully accepted.
Contact the President of the society, Bradley Bender at 293-5150 for further information.
