It was February 3, 1934, at 2:15 AM when the fire in the Stiles Building was reported by a night watchman at the Slack Company. It was also -10o. Seven businesses were affected by this fire which was amazingly kept from spreading to the two adjoining building.

Hear more about this fire and several other “historic” fires of Springfield on Saturday, July 16 at 2:00 pm at the Springfield Art and Historical Society location at 65 Route 106 in North Springfield (Next to Cota & Cota). Bunni Putnam will present photographs and information about some of the fires from as far back as 1878. Also included will be some interesting information regarding the establishment and growth of the fire department. This program is free and open to all.
