Memorial Vigil/Meditation for Victims of Lac Megantic Train Disaster

Past event
Jul 6, 2016, 6:30 to 9 PM

Three years ago July 6th, an oil train derailed in Lac Megantic, Quebec. The explosions killed 47 people: folks enjoying a night out at a music club, to family members asleep in their nearby homes. Today, the town, about the size of Saint Albans and only a 3.5 hour drive from Burlington, is still trying to recover emotionally and structurally.

To honor the lives lost and the friends and family that live on, and to call for a 100% clean and safe energy future, 350 Vermont is holding a sunset vigil, and our entire community is invited. https://www.facebook.com/events/2053732364851443/

Where: Battery Park overlooking Lake Champlain, Burlington

When: Wednesday July 6
6:30 pm - viewing of memorial display
7:00 pm - ceremony sharing the lives of the victims of the Lac Megantic explosions and learning about the dangers of fossil fuel extraction and transportation right here on the lake.
7:53 pm - sunset: 47-minute meditation, a minute for each person lost in the Lac Megantic explosions.

This event is being held in conjunction with the third annual Stop Oil Trains week of action to call attention to the threat of oil trains across North America and how we can work together to obtain a safe and clean energy future.
