This Saturday's Blackfly Poetry slam will be hosted by Vermont’s reigning slam champion, Geof Hewitt. All ages are welcome to bring 1 or 2 pieces of their own writing (not just poetry) for 3 minutes (or less) onstage. In case there's a 2nd round, bringing 2 pieces of writing is a good idea, but some slammers have luck presenting the same piece twice! Judges, chosen at random from the audience, will score each piece with bragging rights and a very modest prize for the winner. Slam starts at 3:30 pm. Sign up at 3:25 right there at the slam.
But don’t wait until the slam to get to the festival!
At 10:30am , the first of six great music groups will begin playing.
At 2:00 is the Blackfly Parade and Fashion Show. Create your own costume, or borrow one of ours. There will be a marching band, local tractors, and a fabulous “Where the Wild Things Are” float. Not to toot our own kazoo, but past parades have been described as “the Macy’s Day Parade of the Insect World!”
After the parade, David Schutz will host the Blackfly Pie Contest. Come watch as solo cooks and families submit black and blood themed confections to hungry judges — including Willem Lange and Vermont’s First Lady, Katie Hunt. Slices of the pies will be for sale once the winners have been chosen.
All day long, starting at 11am, grillmeisters will be cooking up jumbo hot dogs, chicken sausage, salmon burgers and more — and volunteers will be scooping up 15 different salads and many outrageously good baked items. The huge silent auction will also start at 11am.
All ages welcome! So grab your blanket or your lawn chair and join us for one fantastic day!
