Green Mountain Sailing Regatta

Stowe Yacht Club will host a RC sailing regatta on the pond at the Commodore Inn Fri., Sat, & Sun, June 3rd, 4th & 5th. Races are run all day from 9:30 until about 4pm. All are welcome to come watch competitors from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic States and as far away as Florida & California.

Friday racing will be the “J” class, largest size of the RC sailboats. These gracious boats are 1/16 scale of the America’s Cup racers from the 1930’s running 7-8.5 feet long, 8-9.5 feet to the top of the mast, and carrying 3000-4000 square inches of sail. Classic designs of the original racers include Shamrock, Ranger, Endeavor, and Yankee.
Sat & Sun racing will be the East Coast 12 meter class. These sailboats are scaled versions of the America’s Cup 12 meter yachts from a more recent era . Length 59 inches, mast height 6 feet, and sail area 1200 square inches.

RC sailing comes very close to the feel of real sailing. Boats are controlled from the shore with radios for steering and sail set. No motors are involved. Generally courses are windward-leeward, twice around finishing at the windward mark. Races take about 10-20 minutes depending on the wind conditions. Competition can be very stiff. The same rules are used as in International racing like the Olympics.

More info about RC sailing and Stowe yacht Club can be found at www.stoweyachtclub.com. Informal racing on Monday & Wednesday nights at 4:30. Come try it out.
