Rob Mermin will share another favorite silent film from the 1920s in this showing of "His People" at Beth Jacob Synagogue. The film tells the story of two sons of a poor Russian-Jewish pushcart peddler on New York's Lower East Side who are both causing their father grief. One is a selfish ambitious student who wants to become a lawyer and hides his background from his friends. The other gets a job to help pay for his brother's college education, becomes a prizefighting boxer, and plans to marry an Irish girl. The film has great images of the thriving Lower East Side neighborhood in the 1920s.
Admission is $5; free for synagogue members.
Film restoration and new English subtitles by the National Center for Jewish Film.
