Notables from the worlds of food media and environmentalism will come together to discuss the intersections of food writing and environmental stewardship and more on Friday, June 3, as part of the School of the New American Farmstead course “Food Writing From the Farm.”

The moderated panel, “Environmental Stewardship and Food Writing,” will feature Chelsea Green publisher and Sterling College Trustee Margo Baldwin, Sterling College President Matthew Derr, former New York Times reporter and Sterling College Trustee Marian Burros, and will be moderated by food and restaurant consultant Clark Wolf.

The panel begins at 4 p.m. at Common House on the College’s campus and is free and open to the public.

Derr will discuss what constitutes environmental stewardship education, and why it is important in today’s political and educational landscape. Baldwin and Burros will then discuss how to share the ideas presented by environmental stewardship education with the world.

Wolf and Burros are instructors for the School of the New American Farmstead course “Food Writing from the Farm.” Burros has been writing about the politics of food, food safety, health and agriculture for newspapers in Washington and New York for more than 40 years. She spent 27 years at the New York Times, and continues to write for the Times and other publications. In 2008, Marian’s feature article in the Times about agricultural innovation in the Hardwick area set off a wave of publicity about food systems in the Northeast Kingdom.

Wolf has more than 30 years experience in the food industry and is the founder and President of the Clark Wolf Company. He is a columnist for forbes.com, has created and hosted two broadcast television series, and currently hosts the weekly radio program “At the Table with Clark Wolf.” He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the James Beard Foundation in 2009.

Margo Baldwin is the President and Publisher of Chelsea Green Publishing, the White River Junction, VT-based book publishing company she co-founded with her husband Ian Baldwin in 1984. Chelsea Green is considered the preeminent publisher of books on the politics and practice of sustainable living, including foundational books on organic agriculture and permaculture; green building and renewable energy; local economies and the Transition movement; eco-cuisine and local food systems; systems thinking and holistic management strategies; and occasional forays into progressive politics. Chelsea Green has about 400 books in print and has had four NYT bestsellers, including The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz.

Matthew Derr is the 11th President of Sterling College. Prior to taking up his role at Sterling, President Derr served as visiting fellow with the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA), an alliance of 13 selective, independent, colleges that works to strengthen learning in the tradition of the liberal arts. President Derr came to the GLCA from his post as Interim President of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, having led an alumni effort to revitalize and reopen the college, an effort that raised more than $20 million in giving and transferred assets of over $50 million. In 2011, President Derr was awarded the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Chief Executive of the Year award for the Midwest for his work on behalf of Antioch and the GLCA.

The vibrant working landscape of Vermont has been the inspiration for Sterling College’s curriculum for a half century. Sterling's sustainable agriculture and land management programs were among the first in the nation. The School of the New American Farmstead at Sterling College connects the College's mission of environmental stewardship education by linking ecological principles of land management with the entrepreneurial community-building spirit of today's artisan food movement.
