Please consider participating in the 4th annual Hearts for Hunger 5k/1k Fun Run and Walk that takes place at CVU this Saturday, May 21! Gather your friends and family to walk or run, or if you know any kiddos who would enjoy a friendly 1k "race" please invite them! Volunteers from the United Church of Hinesburg work extremely hard for many months to put on this event that in the end benefits all Vermonters...ALL of the proceeds from this event go to the Vermont Foodbank Backpack Program for youth. Children who have reliable access to food can grow and learn and get the most out of school. From there they have better chances at success later in life, and can grow up to be supportive and hard-working members of our community; who knows, they may join professions that directly support older generations!
The Backpack Program is a nationally recognized program of Feeding America that strives to bring meals to food-insecure Vermont youth at times when other resources, like school breakfast and lunch, are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. In our first year we raised $3,800...then $4,500 in our second year. In 2015 we donated an incredible $6,800 to the Backpack Program! We were ecstatic with our success last year, and because of our fundraising the Vermont Foodbank has been able to expand this program to more elementary schools.
