Help protect the South Pond area
The invasion has begun at South Pond. Invasive plants have established themselves around the Pond. Now it’s time to do something about them!
The first two steps in controlling these invaders are next week, May 19th and 21st, and we would love your help. Step one is a Woods Forum at the Marlboro Elementary School at 7:00 PM on the 19th to talk about what is out there, how to identify it, how it got there, how to control it, and what it means for the future of South Pond if we don’t. The Woods Forum format is designed to be interactive and informative. This will NOT be an hour and half Power Point presentation. There will be a short presentation at the start by Pieter van Loon, Director of Forest Stewardship for Vermont Land Trust followed by a question, answer, and discussion period where we can talk about all things related to invasive species. What’s growing around your house? Is there a plant you want to know how to eradicate? Did you introduce something to your yard or garden that got away and was hard to control? Bring your questions and stories to share so we can all learn.
Part two will be an invasive plant pulling event on Saturday the 21st at South Pond. Bring your gloves, maybe a shovel, some sturdy shoes and pitch in to help eradicate invasive plants from the edges of South Pond. There are plants of all sizes to pull, so we can use people of all sizes. Come one, come all and protect one of the most important places in our town. Gather at the Town beach at 10:00.
This is part of a US Forest Service-funded cooperative grant with the Vermont Land Trust, the VT chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the VT Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. No need to RSVP, but if you want to let us know you will be coming, email pieter@vlt.org.
