Dear Neighbors,
This coming Monday, the City Council will convene its second of three meetings for the month of May. Following a brief Local Control meeting that will begin at 7pm, the Council meeting will begin immediately thereafter.
We will begin our meeting with an annual report from the Fire Commission and the Public Works Commission. Each City commission is required to submit a report annually to the Council. Over the course of the next few Council meetings, we will have some of these commissions appear at our meetings to present their report and allow us time for questions and comments.
The next item on our agenda is the confirmation of the appointment of the CEDO director. The Mayor has appointed Noelle MacKay as the next director and, as with all department head appointments (with the exception of the Director of Planning and Zoning and the Superintendent of the Schools), the Council is responsible for confirming the appointment. At some point during the Council meeting, we will recess the meeting and convene a meeting of the City Council with Mayor Presiding to take up two items relating to this appointment. The resolutions on this agenda relate to a hardship exemption and a request by the Mayor to amend our rules to allow for a hardship exemption for a person appointed to a department head who resides in Chittenden County but not in Burlington to continue to reside in that home during their tenure serving the City.
After these votes, we will have a public hearing on the Community Block Grant Program and HOME Action Plan for Housing and Community Development. We will have a presentation from Chittenden Solid Waste District on their FY2017 budget.
The next two items are resolutions; one is to authorize the City to enter into a contract for work on the street, sidewalk and greenbelt to accommodate construction on a portion of the City’s right-of-way on Church and Cherry Streets. The second is a resolution to disband the North Avenue Task Force which had been created to work with the Department of Public Works and other departments on the North Avenue Corridor Study.
We have two expected Executive Sessions Monday evening. The first relates to a tax appeal settlement and the second is an update on collective bargaining. Prior to these Executive Sessions, we will have committee reports, updates from any Councilor on City affairs and comments from the Mayor.
As with all Council meetings, please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our Public Forum which begins at 7:30pm. Clickable agenda items can be found on the City's website:

As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. Please be in touch over the weekend and on Monday.
My best,
Karen
