Hairspray - Get Your Intersectionality On

Past event
May 4, 2016, 7 to 9 PM

Sunday I attended the performance of Hairspray at Lost Nation. Wow! I had experienced the death of a pet so my heart was broken open. I welcomed the comic relief and I cried at the blatant injustices of 1962 Baltimore which sadly are still present today. After the performance I attended a workshop which included five organizations working on racial justice. Double Wow!
The second whitest state in the Union, Vermonters often don't feel the need to work on racism as less than 1% of the population is African American or Latino, we simply do not encounter issues of race every day. We fail to remember the institutional racism that our country has engaged in since its founding, That our privilege in Vermont comes from a system that has favored people of European descent.
The Peace and Justice Center will be giving a workshop on Intersectionality this Wednesday, May 4th 7-9pm at Lost Nation Theater. Intersectionality is a concept developed by black feminists coined by Kimberle Crenshaw that describes the way our identities as well as systems of oppression overlap. Here is a blurb from MTV's Decoded https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-nmxnmt_XU I invite you to attend, choose to engage in the conversation and further our understanding of how we can create a just/fair community that welcomes people of diverse intersectionality.Prepared to be wowed!
