Take a scheming slave, two innocent virgins - male and female, a lech, his harridan wife, a senile old coot, a madam, a vainglorious military bully, and a neurotic flunky continually on the verge of nervous collapse. Mix them with an assortment of courtesans, slaves, and flunkies and add a plot filled with secret plots, mysterious potions, mistaken identities, and cunning subterfuges, and what do you end up with? An hilarious musical based on one of the oldest stories in the world. Literally. Forum is Steve Sondheim's breakthrough musical based on the farces of Plautus, the Neil Simon of 250 B.C. It was the first musical for which Steven Sondheim's wrote both words and music and while his score was under-appreciated at the time -- Forum won the Tony for Best Musical, but Sondheim wasn't even nominated -- it has stood the test of time and is now admired for its catchy melodies and brilliant lyrics.
