Green Up Day is on Saturday, May 7th this year! Join South Hero Land Trust and your friends and neighbors to remove trash from our roadsides and lake shore, maintain our public trails, and restore our natural areas to prime ecological health. We need volunteers to remove litter from South Hero's streets! If you'd prefer to work in a team, we have three great opportunities to participate in our fun group volunteer activities! Contact Katy at 372-3786 or katy@shlt.org for more information or to sign up!

Group Volunteer Activities:
Restore Round Pond: Did you know that invasive plants threaten the health of our native forests, fields, and wetlands? Non-native, invasive plants use competitive advantages to colonize disturbed areas, eventually pushing out native species and disrupting natural ecosystem functions.Join Lake Champlain Land Trust and South Hero Land Trust from 9:00-11:00 on Green Up Day to help remove an infestation of invasive wild parsnip from Round Pond Natural Area. During summer, wild parsnip's flowers produce a sap that burns in the presence of sunlight, leaving burns and blisters on human skin. Springtime is a great time to dig them up, well before they flower. Work pants, boots, and work gloves encouraged. Park in the triangle at the intersection of Landon Road and East Shore Road.

Maintain the Rail Trail: Join the South Hero Recreation Commission and South Hero Land Trust in an effort to prepare the Rail Trail for a season of walking, running, and biking outdoors! The South Hero Rail Trail follows the path of the historic Island Line railroad, cutting through wetland, field, and forest in the heart of South Hero. If you've never walked the Rail Trail, this is a great opportunity to experience the natural beauty of this fun and easy path. We'll be working in crews from 9:00-11:00 am to pick up trash, remove large debris from the trail, and trim back encroaching bushes. Please bring small hand clippers if you have them. Work pants, boots, and gloves are encouraged. Meet at the parking area at the northern entrance to the trail, at the intersection of Tracy Road and Station Road.

White's Beach Cleanup: This is a great way to introduce young children to the volunteer spirit of Green Up Day. All ages are welcome to join South Hero Land Trust staff and board members to help clean up debris and trash from White's Beach. This popular swimming spot provides fun in the sun all summer long, with stunning views of the Adirondacks across the lake. We'll make sure that the beach is clean, safe, and ready for a season of swimming, splashing, and sunbathing. Meet at the parking area for White's Beach. 10:00-11:00 am.

Independent Volunteer Option:
Clean up your street (or lakeshore)! If you're more of an independent worker, sign up to remove litter from a stretch of South Hero roadside or lakeshore. This could be the street you live on, walk every day, or one that you'd like to discover! Special Green Up Day trash bags and safety instructions will be available at the South Hero Land Trust office. This year, in an effort to prevent reusable materials from entering the landfill, South Hero Land Trust will provide specially-marked bags for recycling. Call or email Katy to sign up for your favorite street: 372-3786 or katy@shlt.org. Street cleanup efforts take place all day. Bags will be picked up from roadsides during the afternoon of May 7th.

After all that hard work you might be hungry! Join South Hero Land Trust from 11:00-12:30 for our annual Green Up Day Thank You BBQ! We'll be serving FREE burgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs hot off the grill, with ice cream to finish it off. Celebrate your hard work and a cleaner, greener South Hero and connect with your friends and neighbors! Many thanks to the Naud/Pendolino family and Marco DiCarlo for their continuing generosity in sponsoring the annual BBQ. This BBQ is also made possible by a number of local food donors- thank you to Canamak Farms, Wally's Place: Bagel & Deli, and Island Homemade Ice Cream for your generosity in support of Green Up Day!

For more information, to sign up to clean your street, or to RSVP for one of our AWESOME group activities, contact Katy at 372-3786. We can't wait to see all of your smiling faces on Green Up Day!
