Looking for something to do after Green Up Day? The Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne is featuring two award-winning graphic novelists -- James Kochalka and Gareth Hinds -- for back-to-back drawing demonstrations and talks with the authors on Saturday, May 7th at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
James Kochalka (of American Elf fame) is the creator of several children's graphic novel series. Kochalka, who lives in Burlington and was named Vermont’s first-ever Cartoonist Laureate in 2011, has a new book: The Glorkian Warrior and the Mustache of Destiny. It is the third book in the Glorkian Warrior series and is geared toward the youngest comics aficionados, ages 5-9.
Gareth Hinds, who grew up in central Vermont, is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels for teens based on literary classics, including Beowulf, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. Gareth is the recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. His new book, Samurai Rising, tells the story of the legendary Japanese samurai Yoshitsune. Hinds’ talk is best suited for ages 10-adult.
The event will be held at the Flying Pig Bookstore (5247 Shelburne Road) and is free of charge. RSVPs are welcome but not required: flyingpigevents@gmail.com or 802-985-3999.
