Vermont Choral Union in concert on Friday, April 29, 7:30 pm, Unitarian Church of Montpelier, 130 Main Street, Montpelier. In that time, In this place: My spirit sang all day… My heart an echo caught – Inspiring a cappella music from far and near, past and present features Monteverdi’s Missa In illo tempore, written in 1610 alongside his more well-known Vespers, but in an intricate style quoting Gombert’s motet, In illo tempore, a work also presented by the 33-voice a cappella ensemble. Between the movements of Monteverdi’s mass setting, VCU will offer selections on themes of time and place, including the Vermont premiere of Christina Whitten Thomas’s ’Tis You That Are The Music. The program includes 19th- and 20th-century British partsongs My Spirit Sang All Day, Never Weather-Beaten Sail, and Sweet Day by Gerald Finzi, Charles H.H. Parry, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Also, from the Broadway tradition, Robert Edgerton’s sensitive arrangement of Bernstein’s Somewhere and Jeff Buettner’s lush setting of Sondheim’s Not a Day Goes By. Bloch’s Yih’yu l’ratzon, Will Todd’s lyrical In This Place, and Shawn Kirchner’s energetic setting of the traditional spiritual, O What A Beautiful City round out the program. Directed by Jeff Rehbach. Tickets: $15, $10 for seniors/students, and $40 for families at Eventbrite.com or at the door. Details at VTChoralUnion.org or (802) 989-7355.
