Learn about water-friendly homesteading and farming with Friends of Northern Lake Champlain!
This April, join the Friends of Northern Lake Champlain for the first two sessions in a new educational program: Homesteading for Clean Water: A Farm Table Conservation Series. “Increased attention to food security issues has resulted in a surge in the amount of Franklin County residents who cultivate their own vegetables and raise livestock or poultry,” comments FNLC Executive Director Denise Smith. This program is designed to share information on how small-scale farmers and homesteaders can employ water-friendly conservation practices to protect Lake Champlain.
Experts on agriculture and water quality from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Vermont Extension, and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets will present on topics including watershed science, soil health and erosion, simple conservation practices, and the Required Agricultural Practices mandated by Vermont’s new water quality legislation, Act 64. Attendees will gain practical tools for preventing harmful runoff and retaining nutrients on the land. These FREE events will include light refreshments and take-home materials.
1st Session: Wednesday, April 13th, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm. Carman Brook Farm (in the sugar house). 1275 Fortin Road, Swanton.
2nd Session: Wednesday, April 20th, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm. Snow Farm Vineyard & Winery (in the tasting room). 190 West Shore Road, South Hero.
Homesteading for Clean Water: A Farm Table Conservation Series is made possible by a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program and the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
